4th grade class students are engaged in units of study that contain fictional and informational texts to improve students' comprehension by strengthening background knowledge, vocabulary, and motivation. Students developed and filled out quilts to improve their background knowledge on informational texts to activate and build prior knowledge for fictional texts on the same topic. Students enjoyed improving there vocabulary through different opportunities in using the same word or group of conceptually related words in a variety of different texts, in addition; students were motivated by the multiple entry points suited to individuals preferences for fictional or informational texts. Throughout the process students worked together and developed a monumental product in which they were proud of.
