On February 9, 2024, at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio, a dynamic team from La Joya ISD captured the audience’s attention with a spirited presentation on the history of Cumbia and its rhythmic allure. Dr. Zamora, Assistant Fine Arts Director, collaborated with Mr. Loya (Flores Elementary), Mr. De La Garza (Escandon Elementary), and Ms. Arriazola (Garza Elementary) to deliver an engaging session that filled the room with about 800 eager participants.
Their presentation seamlessly blended historical insights with live demonstrations, inviting attendees to explore the vibrant origins and cultural significance of Cumbia. The interactive approach fostered a lively atmosphere where attendees were encouraged to join in the celebration. By the end, the room resonated with music and laughter, as everyone embraced the joyous spirit of Cumbia. The success of their presentation highlighted the power of music and celebrated the unique cultural identities that enrich our communities. By Estefania Arriazola
