Students with balloons on self made race cars for STEM activity

Fifth grade students Vanessa Torres, Ivaana Lopez, Amy Cruz, and Mia Sanchez at Garza Elementary designed a vehicle with recycling materials. They used a piece of cardboard, plastic caps, toothpicks, a straw, tape, and a balloon. They participated in a contest with their classmates to see who could design a vehicle that could move the fastest or goes the farthest. The students each took turns and measure the total distance travel in feet. They also were able to revisit their design and made their vehicle go even faster. Through this STEM students were able to experience mechanical energy, the energy of movement. They learned that when applied force an object can move, stop moving, or can change direction.
